Sustainability Engineer

We are looking for a full-time Sustainability Engineer to join our Hampton, Richmond or Virginia Beach office.  In is new position, we are looking for someone who is passionate about sustainability (ie: you eat, breathe and sleep it). This position reports to our Chief Operating Officer. 

Purpose – The Sustainability Engineer will lead the company’s new sustainability engineering and building initiatives. He/she will demonstrate their passion for sustainability building and initiatives by helping educate the Thompson Consulting Engineers team and our clients on best practices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage green building design and construction milestones. 

  • Develop, lead and manage the development of sustainability documentation. 

  • Assist with and at times independently review construction drawings for compliance with sustainability requirements 

  • Develop and deliver presentations on an as-needed basis to educate our team and clients as needed on best-practices.

  • Participate in planning studies.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Sustainable design field with experience designing commercial buildings, educational facilities, hospital/medical or similar. 

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or a related field is required 

  • Demonstrated proficiency working with multiple sustainability frameworks, such as the LEED® Green Building Rating Systems (LEED-NC, LEED for Schools, LEED-EBOM, or LEED for Homes), the International Green Construction Code (IgCC), Green Globes, Earthcraft, NGBS, or Enterprise Green Communities. 

  • Ability to assist diverse members of a project team with sustainability strategies. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Ability to successfully handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment with little oversight. 

  • Relentless attention to organization, detail, and follow-through. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams). 

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Bluebeam and other supporting design programs.
