As our Human Resources Manager, you will own the people function end to end—from recruiting the engineers, designers, and project professionals who will shape our future, to caring for the team members who make our work possible every day. You will partner directly with firm leadership in a collaborative environment where culture, mentorship, and long-term growth are part of the day-to-day work.

Responsibilities
What You’ll Do
Talent Acquisition & Recruiting
- Lead full-cycle recruiting for engineering, design, commissioning, and administrative roles across all three Virginia offices.
- Develop proactive staffing strategies and talent pipelines that anticipate the firm’s future hiring needs and support long-term growth.
- Partner with department leaders and project managers to define role requirements, workforce plans, and hiring priorities.
- Source candidates through job boards, social media, university partnerships, industry networks, and employee referrals.
- Manage the full applicant experience—screening, interview coordination, offers, and a smooth handoff into onboarding.
- Represent Thompson at career fairs, campus events, and industry associations to build the firm’s employer brand.
Benefits & Total Rewards
- Administer the firm’s benefits programs, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and paid time off.
- Manage annual open enrollment, benefits communications, and day-to-day employee questions.
- Serve as the primary liaison with benefits brokers, insurance carriers, and retirement plan providers.
- Support compensation practices and salary benchmarking to keep the firm’s total-rewards offering competitive.
Employee Relations & Engagement
- Serve as a trusted resource for employees and managers on workplace questions, concerns, and conflict resolution.
- Support performance management, reviews, and professional development processes.
- Promote a positive, collaborative culture through engagement initiatives, recognition, and team events.
- Advise leadership on employee relations matters with sound judgment and discretion.
Onboarding & the Employee Lifecycle
- Deliver a welcoming, well-organized onboarding experience for every new team member.
- Maintain accurate employee records and HRIS data throughout the employee lifecycle.
- Coordinate offboarding, exit interviews, and related transitions professionally and confidentially.
HR Compliance & Operations
- Ensure compliance with federal and Virginia employment laws and regulations.
- Maintain and update HR policies, the employee handbook, and standard operating procedures.
- Support payroll coordination and accurate recordkeeping in partnership with Finance.
- Safeguard the confidentiality and integrity of all HR data and processes.
- Create ad hoc reports to help inform leadership decisions.
Culture & Leadership Partnership
- Partner with firm leadership on workforce planning, organizational development, and retention strategy.
- Champion professional development, licensure support, and career-growth programs.
- Contribute to a people-first culture that reflects the firm’s values of collaboration, mentorship, and technical excellence.
Qualifications
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Five or more years of progressive HR experience, including hands-on recruiting and staffing.
- Demonstrated success in full-cycle recruiting—ideally within engineering, architecture, construction, or professional services.
- Working knowledge of federal and Virginia employment law, benefits administration, and HR best practices.
- Proficiency with HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office.
- Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills, with a high degree of discretion and professionalism.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities across a multi-office environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- SHRM-CP / SHRM-SCP or PHR / SPHR certification.
- Experience recruiting technical or engineering talent.
- Experience supporting multiple offices or a multi-state workforce.
- Familiarity with benefits broker and vendor management.
- A strong commitment to people, culture, and continuous professional growth.
- Experience managing or leading teams preferred.
